Our region – Cheviot Hills

Cheviot Hills lies in North Canterbury, 100km north of Christchurch on State Highway 1 and 70km south of Kaikoura. Sheep farming is the major economic activity, as it is for much of the South Island, along with beef and some cropping.

The region became the focus of national attention in the 1890s, when a large local landholding – including the site of the current Mt Beautiful vineyard – became the first in the country to be divided and given away in small lots by ballot, following a new government policy.

With the founding of Mt Beautiful vineyard by Teece Family Vineyards, the Cheviot Hills region enters a new phase of its history. Our hope is that our vineyard will help to further raise the profile of the region and assist in giving the local economy a vital boost.
