2009 Pinot Noir and Riesling showcase outstanding vintage
Our two wine releases for October 2010 bear testimony to an absolutely outstanding 2009 vintage. Both Mt Beautiful Cheviot Hills Pinot Noir 2009 and Mt Beautiful Cheviot Hills Riesling 2009 show the impact of the great growing season we’ve experienced.
“We had the same warm weather they enjoyed in Marlborough, but without the bother of summer rain,” says winemaker Sam Weaver. “We even ended up harvesting at the same time as our more northerly neighbours!”
Sam has been involved with Mt Beautiful from when we planted the vineyard in 2004. “We haven’t been in the region long, so there’s not much history to go on. Still, our 2009 vintage would rank as exceptional anywhere.”
While some of our Pinot Noir vines were already in their third year of production, we also had some new vines coming on stream in 2009. Their growth was set up by heavy rains in winter that built soil moisture for the dry months that started in spring. The warm, dry weather carried all the way through to harvest, delivering fully ripe, flavourful fruit.
“This Pinot Noir is a beautiful example of what we can achieve in Cheviot Hills, a style of Pinot Noir that appealingly combines characters from both our neighbouring wine regions – the blackberry flavours of Waipara and the elegant definition of Marlborough.”

Blended from different clones and separately fermented batches, this is a deep ruby, fragrant Pinot Noir that exhibits ripe blackberry fruit with a hint of exotic spice and fine, savoury tannins. It is full-bodied and strongly structured, an impressive presence on the palate.
