From its inception, the project team to create the Mt Beautiful vineyard was led by Ron Sutherland, with the on-the-ground management driven by Vern Harris. Ron and David Teece are both from Marlborough and were classmates in geography courses at the University of Canterbury. Ron and Vern have a long-standing relationship with the Teece family over a range of land-based farm and forestry projects. Working on a brief from David Teece, the two identified the potential for Cheviot Hills to produce premium wine. Since then, they have been providing on-site and project management for all the activities involved in developing a vineyard and associated farming.
